Sydney Marathon Championships

This September, you have the opportunity to make history and take-home bragging rights at the inaugural Australian Age Group Marathon Championships and the Australian Clubs Marathon Championships in Sydney.

This is your chance to showcase your club’s or team’s talent on a national stage. Join us at the 2023 Sydney Marathon, presented by ASICS, and compete against the best clubs, teams and age group runners from across Australia.

The competition will be fierce, but the rewards will be even greater. Not only will you have the chance to be crowned Australian champions, but you’ll also have the opportunity to network with other clubs, meet like-minded runners and celebrate your achievements together.

Championship Details

Australian (Elite) Marathon Championships

The traditional Australian Championship with 3 male and 3 female athletes representing their State. State Champions are also awarded to the best performing State.

Who can enter? 

State athletic associations can nominate 3 male and 3 female athletes to represent their state. (Full Marathon participants only)

Who can win?

Fastest male and fastest female.

Australian Clubs Marathon Championships

A new Championship pitting Australia’s best Clubs against each other in three categories, Male, Female and Mixed. 3 athletes in each club in each category.

Who can enter? 

Accredited Athletics Australia run clubs / organisations. (Full Marathon participants only)

Who can win?

Top three results for male, female and mixed count towards overall team time.

Australian Age Group Marathon Championships

A new Championship event that will very quickly become the most popular Australian (Road) Championships on the calendar. Runners 30yrs+ will compete in 5yr age groups against each other.

Who can enter? 

Open to runners aged 30 and older who are registered with a state athletic association. (Full Marathon participants only)

Who can win?

Fastest male and fastest female within each 5 year age group from 30 years.

In addition to the Championships above, Sydney Marathon, presented by ASICS, are also adding two exciting Team Challenges!

A new challenge to encourage team participation. Get your mates together and register as a team to win awesome prizes.

Who can enter? 

All teams outside of the “Corporate” sector – open to social clubs, charities, friends & family teams and sporting teams.

Who can win?

Team with the largest number of Full Marathon finishers.

Championship & Challenge FAQs

• I want to enter, but don't know my Athletics National ID Number. How do I find my number?

  Please contact your state athletic association for assistance.

• What are the age groups for the Australian Age Group Championships? How do I join my appropriate age group?

  When you register, you will be automatically allocated into the appropriate age category based on the date of birth entered.

  Age groups are: 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-89, 90-94, 95-100, 100+

• How many people can be registered as part of a team?

  There is no maximum number of participants in each team. Only the top 3 results will count for the Australian (Elite) Marathon Championships and Australian Clubs Championships. Each team can be all male, all female or mixed.

  For the Team Challenge, the team with the largest amount of Marathon finishers will be the winner.

• I want my team to be eligible for the challenge, but didn't select it previously. How do I change this?

  Teams that are listed within Race Roster will be automatically added to the Teams Challenge and no action is needed.

  As the team captain, you can log into your Race Roster account and edit your response to select the corporate championship.
