Five reasons to run the Sydney Marathon in 2023

With iconic views and a fancy new course, here’s why running the Sydney Marathon should be on your bucket list this year.

Did you know that almost two thirds of Australian give up on their New Year’s resolutions by January 30. Sound familiar? If you’re one of them, you are definitely not alone. So why not set a new goal for 2023? One that will keep you accountable, help you get fitter, give back and earn you a shiny finishers medal at the end of it (with lifetime bragging rights).

Yep, we’re talking about the iconic Sydney Marathon on 17th September. Not only did it just celebrate its 20th anniversary, but this year it’s going to be bigger and better than ever.

Here are five reasons why it should be on your bucketlist in 2023:

#1: It’s one of the world’s most scenic marathons

With epic harbour views from almost every angle, the Sydney Marathon is known as one of the world’s most scenic races for a reason. Not only does our course take you over the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge (sans the cars), and along the shoreline but it also finishes (in a sea of cheering) in front of the iconic Sydney Opera House, right next to the Royal Botanical Gardens. It couldn’t be prettier. It’s a stunning way to enjoy your next marathon.

#2: You’ll be fully supported in your training

Whether you’re a seasoned professional or a newbie runner, registering for the Sydney Marathon gives you access to our full training resources and support. You don’t have to do this alone, we’ve got decades of experience, plus a range of running and health experts to get you on your way. We are here to help you cross that finish line in style (albeit a little sweaty).

 #3: There’s a brand-new course this year

You spoke to us, and we listened. Very shortly we will be releasing our brand-new course for 2023. So, what’s new? Well, we’re dropping some sections that you told us were pain-points, and we’ve added whole new sections that we know you’ll love. Expect much more roadway, no boardwalks, less 180-degree turns, and a much smoother flow. We’re making our much-loved course even better and we can’t wait for race day 2023. View the course here

#4: Raise money for those in need

The Sydney Marathon isn’t just about pushing you to your personal best, nor being a part of one of the best running events in the world. It’s about finishing and having a chance to help others through fundraising. Knowing that you’re training for a special charity will give you that extra incentive you might need on a rainy training day, or on kilometre 32km on race day. And in fact, our marathon runners are some of the most successful fundraisers each year. We know that committing to the marathon is no small feat, so it’s only natural that your family and friends will want to support you and give back too. Imagine how much you could help raise this year?

 #5: You’ll make history

Sure, you could run the Sydney Marathon for the views, or for the kudos of finishing one of the world’s most scenic races, but this year, you can also be part of history. Huh? Well, not only has the Sydney Marathon become the first event in the Southern Hemisphere to achieve the highly prestigious World Athletics Platinum Label, but we are also officially a candidate for the Abbott World Marathon Majors. That means when we qualify, we’ll be one of the seven World Marathon Majors, alongside iconic races such as the New York Marathon, the Tokyo Marathon, and the London Marathon. So far, we’re amazed to have a record number of runners signed up already to try out our new route. Will you join them?
